Escape to Chiang Rai

We decided to leave Koh Chang island life behind and head up North to Chaing Rai, Don Mae Salong, Chang Mai and Pai for our winter holiday.

This is the first of a four blog posts from each of our tour destinations. It includes how to get to Chaing Rai, accommodation, food and places of interest in the most northern city in Thailand that was founded by King Mangrai in 1262.

We took our little sister away for the first 3 days of our Northern Thailand escape (Karok pictured above and below) and stayed in De Hug, a boutique hotel in the heart of Chiang Rai.

Remember to wrap up in some warm clothes. The temperature in the day is fine but in the evenings it drops right off, so beanie hats, hoodies and scarfs are de rigueur!

Chiang Rai – Walking Street

We headed to Chiang Rai’s famous Walking Street to sample the local delights. We were in luck as in December locally grown fruits such as strawberries and the biggest avocado’s you have ever seen are in abundance. I wasted no time drinking a delicious and super fresh avocado shake.

Street food however wasn’t in abundance but fortunately our taxi driver told us about a very good and popular restaurant that served traditional Northern Thai – Chiang Rai fare. So we headed to Phu Lae for dinner. Believe me, the food was as good as it looks in Katae’s photo below.

กองทัพต้องเดินด้วยท้อง ณ เวลานี้ก็เริ่มหิวกันทุกคนเลย คืนแรกก็ตั้งใจกันไว้ว่าอยากกินอาหารพื้นเมือง ก็เดินๆมาเกือบจะสุดทางก็เห็นร้านอาหารที่พี่แท็กซี่จากสนามบินเขาแนะนำว่าให้ไปชิม พวกเราก็ไม่รอ เห็นปุบก็รีบตรงเข้าไปทันที คนเยอะพอสมควรดีที่เข้าไปก็ได้ที่นั่งเลย พนักงานบริการรวดเร็วดี อาหารก็ไม่ต้องรอนาน

เมนูแรก “ออเดิร์ฟล้านนา”
ภายในจานจะมีไส้อั่ว ผักลวก, หมูยอ, แคปหมู และใจกลางก็คือ น้ำพริกหนุ่ม – Traditional Northern Thai appetiser

เมนูต่อไป กะหล่ำหัวใจผัดน้ำปลา – Stir-fried vegetables with fish sauce

ต้มยำปลาคัง – Tom Yum with fish

เมนูสุดท้ายของคำ่คืนนี้ จำชื่อไม่ได้ เนื้อปลาทอดกรอบราดด้วยน้ำยำรสเด็ด – Spicy fish salad

หลังจากอิมกันแล้ว ก็เดินเล่นเพื่อย่อยอาหารมาตรง หอนาฬิกา Chiang Rai Clock Tower in the Wiang Mueang area.

By the time we finished our feast, Walking Street was winding down for the night. It had been a long day of traveling and acclimatising to the cold, so we headed back to our hotel for some much needed sleep and a little planning for the next full day day of activities in the province of Chiang Rai.
