As a long-term expat in Thailand, there’s one thing I miss more than a bacon sandwich in a greasy spoon, a warm pint of bitter on a cold night, and playing spot the white man on the tube, and that’s going to see a good old-fashioned standup comedy show.

There are comedy nights, and then there are proper comedy nights, the ones where you walk out feeling a bit lighter, cheeks aching, and wondering why you do not do this more often.

Bangkok is getting one of those on Friday, 12 December, when the legendary Stephen K Amos returns with his brand-new show, Now We’re Talking!, at The Lancaster Hotel.

And yes, I am slightly biased because the support act is my old mate, Aidan Killian. But also, I have seen enough gigs over the years to know a simple truth, sometimes the support act sneaks up on you and steals your heart. You turn up thinking, “Right, headliner is the main event”, and then the opener lands a few punches so clean you spend the rest of the week quoting them at inappropriate moments, like in the queue at Tops or while ordering som tam.

Stephen K Amos, the name you have definitely heard (even if you cannot place it yet)

Stephen K Amos is one of those comics who feels instantly familiar because you have probably seen him pop up everywhere over the years. He’s well loved for hosting TV’s The Stephen K. Amos Show and BBC Radio 4’s Life: An Idiot’s Guide, and he has appeared on shows like Live At The Apollo, Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle, Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled, and QI. He also hosted BBC Radio 4’s What Does The K Stand For? from 2013 to 2017, a semi-autobiographical sitcom inspired by his South London childhood.

Critics have been doing that thing they do, reaching for the superlatives, and for once it feels pretty accurate:

And the support, Aidan Killian, the “wait, why is he this funny?” moment

Now, full disclosure, Aidan is my old mucker, so yes, I am biased. (and he’s not even paying me to write this post).

But I am also right.

Aidan Killian is a spirited, passionate comedian who left a corporate banking job in 2008 to save the world, one endorphin at a time. That is not just a good line, it is basically his whole vibe. He has performed his unique comedy style for seven Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, was a highlight at Glastonbury Festival in 2016 and 2017, and in 2017 he was nominated for Best Comedian at The World Fringe. He has been sharing laughter on stages all over the world since.

And this is where my biased little anecdote comes in. I have lost count of how many times someone has messaged after a gig saying some version of: “Mate, the support was brilliant, what was his name again?” That is not shade on the headliner, it is just what happens when you get a great opener who turns the room from “polite anticipation” into “alright, we are fully in this”.

So if you are on the fence, do not think of Aidan as “just the support”. Think of this as a two-for-one, a proper night out with two comedians who know how to bring the laughs.

Where is The Lancaster Hotel, and how do you get there?

The Lancaster Hotel is in central Bangkok, in the Phetchaburi Road area, not far from Makkasan and Asok, so it’s an easy one whether you’re coming from Sukhumvit, Silom, or all the way from Trat province.

Best ways to get there:

• MRT: Hop off at Phetchaburi MRT, then it’s a short walk or a very quick taxi ride if you’re feeling flush.

• Airport Rail Link: Makkasan is nearby, handy if you’re coming from further out, or if you just like feeling efficient for once.

• Taxi or Grab: The simplest option, just allow extra time because Bangkok will always try to humble you at the last minute.

• Driving: If you’re driving, check parking options at the hotel when you arrive.

My two practical tips:

• Aim to arrive 20 to 30 minutes early (earlier if you wanna hit one of the splendid bars or dine) so you can get settled without doing that sweaty sprint in “nice going out” clothes.

• If you’re coming from Sukhumvit around 6pm to 8pm, do not gamble on traffic, use MRT where you can.

• The Lancaster is a fine hotel, and their sumptuous rooms are available if you want to make a weekend of it.
