Unfortunately, it’s not known as a vibrant culinary scene, which is a shame because with a little research, when eating out in Trat it can be wonderful experience.

From traditional Thai dishes to international flavours, Trat offers a diverse range of dining experiences. Join us on a culinary journey as we explore my top nine must-try restaurants in Trat, (in no particular order) that promise to tantalise your taste buds and leave you craving for more.

Please note, due to Thailand’s strict defamation laws, I can’t be brutally honest about every restaurant I’ve reviewed. Besides, we all have different expectations and experiences, so you may have a completely different opinion to mine, and that’s Okay.

However, I will say my wife and I dine with friends and family at all these restaurants and the opinions expressed are my own. So, you can take it with a pinch of spice but don’t say Trat doesn’t have any good restaurants to eat in. Ambiance and Setting

Located on the edge of Sra Sri Siat Reservoir (close to Canvas Family Home) is the new restaurant, dessert and coffee shop ลุงป้าบ้านล่าง199, opening in November 2023.
The building is an impressive design consisting of large floor to ceiling windows at the front of the building while the interior is well laid out, all be it a high-end cafeteria with a mezzanine. The mezzanine functions as a library and co-working space with ample seating, tables and large screen.

The ground floor space includes a Aunty Nom’s Thai Dessert Shop and Khun Ning’s Coffee Bar.
This restaurant also has a ramp for wheelchair access.
Fun Fact: Nanake555 the famous Thai MC is Aunty’s son.

Signature Dishes

The main dishes available daily are roast chicken, pork and beef, in addition to red pork, and pork legs. Other meals change regularly to keep the menu fresh and include ramen noodles and beef khao soi.

To be perfectly transparent, I may have a bias with Thinglish Kitchen. My wife started this restaurant in Khao Saming (9km from Trat town) several years ago.

Goldlip Cafe – The Healthy Option

Goldlip Cafe is a new restaurant on the Trat culinary scene. The unique cafe interior is decked out with custom furniture and jewelry tastefully displayed throughout the space (the proprietors have a factory manufacturing all the items).

Keto Friendly

The menu consists of bakery goods that are 100% keto, mixed fresh fruit smoothies, sourdough bread, pizza, the creamiest Italian champignon mushroom soup, quinoa salad and Avocado-egg rolls.

Leave room for dessert, Goldlip Cafe offer a wide range of naughty but nice desserts made from their own organic fruits including coconut ice cream with blueberries, the lightest puff pancakes with strawberries and  fresh fruit salads.

Goldlip Cafe have only recently opened and to date have no Google or Facebook reviews. It looks like I’ll be the first, but I’m sure I wont be the last. Katae and I chanced upon Goldlip by chance because the restaurant we planned to have lunch at was closed. One door closes and another one opens and we are happy to returned several times since.

If you want to start your day with a healthy breakfast bowl or indulge in a lazy lunch, Goldlip Cafe is your destination. A welcome addition to eating out in Trat for the health conscience and foodies alike.

Kaotaa House – Fill Your Tank!

Kaotaa House Trat is a large venue but a bit of a hidden gem in Trat, offering a charming cafe experience. You could say it is a gas station coffee shop, but this is no Amazon Cafe. The cafe situated at the ESSO gas station looks like ‘The White House‘, yet its warm, whimsical and inviting decor, combined with its relaxed atmosphere, makes it a perfect spot for a leisurely coffee break or a light meal.

Feline Special

Cat lovers are in for a treat. There are two beautiful creatures here to pet and it looks like they get a few snack too.

Coffee – Bakery – Eatery

Begin Station is another little gem approximately 12km from Trat city center by the Sukhumvit Road heading towards the town.

This ‘white box‘ near the Khao Saming Provincial Electricity Authority building is a simple, minimalist haunt and a place we frequently frequent. We can’t drive passed without stopping for a Matcha Creme Cheese Latte since we discovered it, sometimes with a slice of Honey Cheese Pie. When we have more time, we have a relaxing lunch.

Exit the rear of the restaurant to a small outdoor seating area under the shade of a a tamarind tree if you prefer to dine alfresco.

What’s on the Menu

Begin Station have a good selection of coffees, refreshing sodas, and matcha green teas, I may have mentioned the matcha already! 55. Main dishes range from pineapple fried rice with chicken or shrimp, spaghetti, chicken basil and friend egg, and kimchi soup.

If you have a sweet tooth, believe me, you’re in the right place. Try their Blueberry Cheesecake Crumble, Rainbow Rare Cheesecake or Almond Croissant which is the perfect accompaniment with a coffee.

Enjoy Vegetarian

For nearly two decades, Joy’s Pizza was a well establish restaurant in central Trat.

Recently, as of July 2024 significant changes have been made. Gone are the steak and fries and even the signature pizzas. With Joy still at the helm, the restaurant has undergone a name change to Enjoy Vegetarian and now serves, well as you may have guessed, vegetarian food.

The Enjoy Vegetarian restaurant in a traditional Thai wood house surrounded by a mature garden of flowers in the heart of Trat. It’s open from 8.30am to 5.30pm six day a week closing on Wednesday.

What’s on the Menu

The menu changes daily but you can expect dishes including Green Curry Tofu, Laab Tofu, Fried Vegetables, Isaan Vegetable Soup, and Noodles.
Enjoy Vegetarian’s food can be enjoyed in the restaurant and is available for take-away.

Tim Kai Kaend ติมไข่แข็ง – Ice Cream Parlour

Tim Kai Kaeng (ติมไข่แข็ง) is one of those proper Trat gems, a small, family run ice cream parlour where locals drop in for something sweet, cold, and a bit different. It is best known for its coconut ice cream served with rich egg yolk mixed in right before you eat, which gives it a silky, custardy vibe without being overly sweet. The result is comforting, indulgent, and surprisingly moreish.

I’m not a fan of seafood in general, but my wife and Thai family adore it. Num Chok is one of the favourite restaurants in the city for the locals. The inexpensive restaurant is very popular and is always full when I drive past. It specialises in Thai seafood, and the dishes are prepared with fresh ingredients that are sourced locally.

One of the standout dishes at Num Chok I’m told is the grilled squid. The squid is cooked to perfection, with a slightly crispy texture on the outside and a tender, juicy interior. The flavours are well-balanced, with a hint of sweetness and a touch of spice that add depth to the dish. Another dish that is highly recommend is the Tom Yum Goong, a spicy and sour soup that is bursting with flavour.

The restaurant is located in a quiet street, away from the hustle and bustle of the market, but still close to the city centre.
