Welcome to our shipping container home here in sunny Thailand. Kick your flip-flops off, beware of the dog and come on in! It started with a dream! We followed through with modelling a concept and finally realised our ambition to built a home using four shipping containers.
What are Shipping Containers?
Shipping containers are used for transporting goods from one country to another.
Shipping containers are made out of steel and come in standardised sizes, which means that they can be loaded on any ship or truck without any modifications being required.
Reasons to Use Shipping Containers
Shipping containers have been used to transport goods for decades. It is only in recent years that they have been used as a building material to construct modular container homes.
There are many benefits of using shipping containers to build container homes. They are durable, cost-effective and easy to transport. They can be used as a space for storage, an office, and like in our case a modern, comfortable home.
Most of my adult life I’ve lived in warehouses, above pubs, hotels and condos. The very thought of living in a traditional house seems quite boring to me so when I first stumbled upon the idea of building a shipping container home, I was instantly hooked. Fortunately my wife was all for it too.
We have recently had our dream home featured in the ‘Container Homes’ book series and you can get your dirty hands on a digital copy by visiting their website here and downloading the ‘Container Home Book 161 – Parallel Offset with Atrium Home‘.
Alternatively, you can get a PDF version here: Shipping-Container-Homes-Book-161-Trat-Thailand
The Container Homes website is full of vital information and some tremendous resources including: 3D Shipping Container Home Design Software, Shipping Container Drawings, Video Tutorials and Shipping Container House Plans to name but a few. If you are interested in how to build your shipping container home in Thailand or any other part of the world, it should be your first port of call.

We get asked lots of questions about how we approached designing and constructing a home made from shipping containers.
- “What’s it like actually living in a box?”
- “Doesn’t it get really hot inside?”
- “Is it a cost effective building solution?”
- “How much did it cost to build a shipping container home?”

Hi Perry,
I am considering a container home in Thailand. I guess you found the land via your wife’s family. I think the water harvesting will be vital for you plants / plantation in the coming years.
Are you “on grid” for electricity? I would be interested in your build costs.
Best wishes, David.
Hi David,
Nice to hear from you.
Lots of questions, for me to answer them in detail would take a while.
We have a consultation service. I’d be happy to schedule a call with you where you can AMA (Ask Me Anything).
I’ll tell you from experience all the pros and cons of building a shipping container house, living in Thailand, buying land, on-off grid living, cost and connections.
If you are seriously considering building a container house in Thailand, I believe we can provide invaluable information and lots of food for thought for you before you start investing time and money.
Lemme know. P.
Hi Perry, we enjoyed your video very much. The Mrs. and I are looking to do the very same thing. We like the look of the land and the fact that you don’t have to use that much air conditioning. We would like to know which province you are in. It seems to be a peaceful, comfortable area. Also how much would it be these days to have a container home like yours?
Best Regards, JD
Hi JD, great to hear you enjoyed our video.
We’re in Trat province about 10KM from town in a quiet country setting.
If you are looking for land here, we do have a plot for sale near Au Tan beach. You can find out all about that here: https://thinglishlifestyle.com/discover-trat/land-for-sale-trat-thailand/
I’m not sure what the prices are to build a container home now. There’s a lot happened in the world since we built ours. It would be best to contact Maha or Container Kings.
If you’re in our province, I don’t mind introducing our builders to you. Good ones are hard to come by. Cheers. P.
